Why run your own hoarding clearance business
Thinking about starting your own business in Logan? The hard part usually isn’t the work. It’s learning the trade, the safety side and the business side all at once, with nobody to ask when something goes wrong.
This pathway is built to take that risk down. You learn on paid work first. You set up your business when you’re ready. And you keep support behind you after that.
Hoarding clearance is work that matters. You walk into homes where someone has been overwhelmed for years. Sometimes the person still lives there. Sometimes a family is sorting out a parent’s estate. When you leave, the house is safe again and people can move forward. Few trades let you see that kind of change in a few days.
And it’s yours. Your name on the ABN. Your call on which work you take, who you hire and how big you grow.
What hoarding clearance actually involves
We’d rather you know now than find out on day one. This is hard, physical work.
- Rooms packed to the ceiling. You’ll sort, bag and carry out tonnes of belongings, rubbish and furniture, often along narrow paths and up and down stairs.
- Unpleasant conditions. Mould, rotting food, animal and vermin waste, strong odours and sometimes sharps. You’ll work in a respirator, disposable coveralls, gloves and safety boots, often in Queensland heat inside a closed-up house.
- Careful sorting. Not everything is rubbish. Documents, photos, cash and keepsakes turn up in the mess, and finding them matters to the family.
- Long days. Bigger clearances run over several days. Early starts are normal, and every one finishes with loading, tipping and a clean-down.
- The human side. You’ll meet people at their lowest. Some are embarrassed, some are grieving, some don’t want you there. Staying calm, discreet and kind matters as much as the lifting.
If that list puts you off, that’s useful to know. If it makes you think “I can do that”, keep reading.
How the pathway works
- Paid training. If you’re successful, you start as a paid casual employee on award wages. You work real clearances alongside an experienced operator and learn the technical, safety and business side of the trade.
- Independent operator. Once you’re ready, you set up your own business with an ABN and your own insurance. You then accept jobs from Hoarding Clearance QLD one at a time, and you’re paid a set share of each job’s value for a completed result. You choose which jobs you take.
- Your own business. You’re free to win your own clients, take other work, and hire or subcontract as you grow. Equipment hire is there if you want it. Whether you use it is up to you.
Support doesn’t stop at any stage. Coaching, safety systems and training carry on while you build.
What you get along the way
- Free business coaching on setting up, quoting, running a clearance and dealing with clients.
- Technical training in sorting and clearance methods, PPE, odour and contamination control, and handling hazards like sharps and mould safely.
- SWMS and safety documentation, so you’re not writing a safety system from scratch.
- Operational systems for job records, checklists and completion reports.
- Optional equipment hire while you build up your own gear. Nobody makes you use it.
What you’ll bring, and what you’ll need later
You don’t need hoarding clearance experience. Hands-on work in a related trade helps, such as:
- restoration or cleaning
- demolition or construction
- waste management or removals
- pest control
To apply, you’ll need:
- a current driver’s licence
- to be comfortable with heavy lifting and long periods in full PPE, because that’s what the work demands
- a reliable work ethic and respect for people’s privacy
When you move to running your own business, you’ll need an ABN and your own insurance. In time you’ll also need your own vehicle and basic kit. You don’t need any of that to apply.
Is this for you?
This is for you if…
- you want to own a business, not just hold a role in one
- you’d rather learn on paid work than put your savings on the line going it alone
- dirty, physical work in tough conditions doesn’t scare you
- you can stay calm and respectful with people in hard situations
- you want to build something in Logan, between Brisbane and the Gold Coast
This isn’t for you if…
- you want a set roster with someone else making every decision
- you’re looking for something easy or quick
- mess, strong smells or pests are a deal-breaker
- you have no interest in running a business one day
How we select
Intake is selective. We take on a small number of people so each one gets proper training and attention. Applying doesn’t mean you’ll get an offer.
We look for two things: relevant hands-on experience, and a genuine intent to build your own business. Selection works both ways, so use the process to decide whether this is right for you too.
Every application is read. If there's a fit, we'll contact you to arrange a call.
